Not All is Lost at Hospital's Lost and Found

April 16, 2012

Patients don’t always leave the hospital with the things they came in with.

Those forgotten items end up in the lost and found at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center, tucked away in banker boxes, if they fit.

Norma Santiago’s wheelchair didn’t.

Her brother and caregiver, Abraham Santiago, said she and her wheelchair ended up at the hospital earlier this month. But Norma, 67, came home without it. She had first gone to see her doctor, in the same wheelchair. While there, her condition got worse and she was taken by ambulance to the hospital. So was her wheelchair, a fact lost in the confusion of a medical emergency.

Abraham called the doctor’s office. No wheelchair. He called the dialysis center where his sister receives treatment. No wheelchair. He worried about the cost of replacing something that was worth upwards of $500. He also knew his sister couldn’t do without it.
