What Is It?
Bone Densitometry is a simple X-Ray test done to measure the amount of calcium in your bones. Desert Reflections' DEXA unit is dedicated to bone density measurements only, which will give physicians precise accuracy with both screening and follow-up test monitoring.
Why Would Your Doctor Order This Test?
A DEXA exam is usually ordered to check for osteoporosis or as a follow-up for someone being treated for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. More than 28 million Americans suffer from this condition, which affects both men and women.
How Is The Test Done?
It is not necessary to undress for this exam. The technologist will ask you to lie down on a padded table. In just a few short minutes, your technologist will perform a scan of your hip and spine. Occasionally, she may also image an extremity such as your wrist or forearm. The results are translated into a "fracture risk indication" report for your physician.
Exam Prep & Scheduling
There is no prep required for this exam. Bone density tests are usually done by appointment. Frequently, female patients combine this test with their annual mammogram as a part of their well-woman care.
